Lobbying is defined as an attempt by an individual or group of people to influence the decision making of someone in a government office. Or, that would be a proper definition. A lobbying firm works by getting clients, normally special interest groups, who pay the firm to represent their cause in Washington and convince politicians to get behind their cause. Jack Abramoff’s favorite clients were Native American tribes. However, he did not favor them in a loving parent way. He favored them for the incredible amount of money he made off of them by overcharging them by millions. With his riches provided by these Native American tribes, Abramoff opened up two restaurants and a line of off-shore casinos. At these fancy new venues, Abramoff would offer politicians free meals, free drinks, and a good time gambling. Meanwhile, they would discuss business and politics, and they would do Abramoff favors because of all of the free luxuries and cash he provides them with. However, there were repercussions to being an out of control, filthy rich con artist. Eventually, questions were being thrown around about the legality of Abramoff’s operation, and the Justice Department started to investigate Abramoff. He eventually pled guilty to several charges and was sentenced to six years served in a federal prison. And although there are plenty of lobbying firms that advocate for positive causes like science, medicine, and civil rights, the actions of the lobbying firms that are morally lacking and corrupt require congress to strengthen the laws surrounding lobbying.
