Gun control policy and school shootings in the U.S.
School shootings in America is becoming quite the epidemic, far more so here than in any other advanced country in the world. The solution? Gun control policy. After a surge in school shootings in the 90s, researchers looked for ways to circumvent this issue. From this came the idea of gun control: the idea that you can actively diminish the amount of murders per capita by controlling the amount of weapons on the street. Gun control policy proposes psychological evaluations prior to exercising one’s 2nd amendment right. In supplement to having a psychological evaluation other methods have been proposed by this gun control policy such as raising awareness in students and faculty, and having metal detector check points at schools.
According to a Harvard research by Amy Cohen, Deborah Azrael and Matthew Miller, the rate of mass shootings alone has tripled since 2011 in the United States (Cohen, Azrael, Miller, 2014).
