Sociological Perspectives On Gun Violence

What is sociology? Sociology is the study of social life, change, behavior and human interaction. Sociology studies the relationships between people’s behavior and how they influence, develop, and change society. In sociology, there are three sociological perspectives that associate with how we view and look at society. The Functionalist Perspective, Conflict Perspective, and Symbolic Perspective all offer a variety of different views on society. Having three different types of sociological perspectives allows individuals to gain a new perspective on society. Each perspective has contributed to a great deal of our understanding of human behavior and interaction. In this essay, I will apply and demonstrate the three sociological perspectives on the issue of gun violence. As you can tell, gun violence has been a big problem in the United States today. There were many school shootings that has happened within the past several such as the Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting, Marysville Pilchuck High School, Delta State University, etc. …show more content…
They would also question whether or not if gun violence has degraded their society. What has guns contributed to our society? For instance, the owner of the gun can easily get their firearm stolen and end up in a criminal’s possession. This can eventually cause more tragic accidents to happen because it fell in the wrong hands. It may provide those in an unthinkable situation protection, but it can also cause more accidents to happen. Gun violence has degraded society due to the fact of getting out of its owners hand easily and has also contributed to a high rate of suicides. According to a research by Harvard, those who owned a gun had a higher percentage rate of suicides. 63% of those were more likely to suicide. A conflict theorist would argue with this issue that instead of contributing and helping our society, it is degrading
