According to the United States Department of Agriculture, almost ninety percent of household grocery shopping primarily comes from supermarkets and supercenters. Images on the labels of our food, such as red barns with a smiling farmer and happy animals, can lead the common consumer into believing their food comes from an ethical source. It may be pleasing to buy into the pretty picture the food industry delivers, but what our grocery bills support is the issue. The fatality rate for agricultural workers was 7 times higher than the fatality rate for all workers in private industry; agricultural workers had a fatality rate of 24.9 deaths per 100,000, while the fatality rate for all workers was 3.5.
