According to The Renfrew Center Foundation for Eating Disorders (2003), “Eating Disorders affect up to 24 million Americans and 70 million individuals worldwide.” There are many serious eating disorders that are prevalent within one’s community. Some of these eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating. Many of the eating disorders have become very widespread due to different social media sites and advertisements. The media sites and advertisements that are frequently recognized within many communities, are promoting beauty to be seen as young and skinny. This has a large influence on many individuals who are on these social media sites, inducing them to starve or binge eat to try to accomplish these unreachable goals for many of their body types. In this essay, I will be analyzing the Pro-Recovery Movement for Eating Disorders on the social media site Instagram to determine the movement’s political aims and goals through the images and writings that are put forth, and through the different ways that this platform allows for a distinct social movement persona to rise from it’s activism, community building, and public engagement.
The Pro-Recovery movement is a program that is aimed to promote and prevent individuals from obtaining an eating disorder.
