College is the place where a person goes to gain a better education and advance their career. In today’s society there is a lot of pressure on young adults to go to college and gain a degree. Every student that plans to go to college works hard to get good grades so the students can get scholarships. Scholarships are key to going to college because it is getting increasingly expensive. Over many years, college costs more and more. There are even new fees made which makes it more than just tuition. Students go into debt during college and some even drop out due the expenses. Some classes require books that are used only once or never used. It is no wonder students are a whole new world of debt. In order to go to school to get a good paying job they need to take out loans. For example, “The average cost of tuition and fees at a private, non-profit, four-year university this school year was $31,231—up sharply from $1,832 in 1971-1972 (in current dollars). At public, four-year schools, tuition and fees cost about $9,139 this year. In the 1971 school year, they added up to less than $500 in current dollars, according to the College Board” (Schoen). That’s an insane amount of money for just one year. The worst part about it is that the price is going up every year. It is not even a set price a student will pay for all four years. Parents try and save up for college for their children but even if they do it is a changing price so chances are they did not save enough. What would have been enough last year may not be enough this year and that’s not going to change. College has become a necessity not a choice like in the past. If a person wants to be successful, they almost have to go to college there are exceptions of course but the majority will have to attend college. Many loan companies thrive on the loans they provide student and so do credit cards. In the past parents were able to pay for college because there was little to no cost. Students did not have to take out loans to get into college or fight for scholarships. Some may say it is good because only those who want to go will go because they will have the drive to push and fight to go. However, this can also put those who want to have a good life out of a home. Not everyone can be number one to gain the scholarships or have the equal opportunity that is advertised.
