The Portrait Hans Cranach Analysis

The artist of the painting I've chosen to analyze is by Hans Cranach. Hans’ was born around 1513 and is the oldest son of Lucas Cranach the Elder. He worked with his dad in his workshop and was also being trained by his father when he was younger. By 1527 Hans was assembling his creations of work but by that time it was difficult to have his own work when it was being compared to his father's.Hans valuable paintings were Portrait of a bearded Man and Hercules at the Court of Omphale, in which he signed the both of them. On october 9, 1537 Hans Cranach died in Bologna.The humanist and poet Johann Stigel wrote a long poem in praise of his skills as a painter when the death of Cranach was announced. In addition, a number of drawings intended for book illustrations have been attributed to the artist. The exhibition on Cranach held in Stockholm in 1988 added more works to his oeuvre. Glancing at the picture there's an instant understanding of what the portrait is portraying. Depicting a historical story in the sense that women are dominant and powerful, not only promiscuous and sexual attractions, so if feeling disrespected or unsafe they will protect themselves. The form of Judith body while holding the sword is definitely dominating the portrait and frame. Her full body is mainly shown indicated that she's the main focal point in the portrait. This painting is very crowded and cramped up in this small area. There's a small space with very little or no movement.There's two individual units, maybe three if including the sword; Judith is the main character so she's a large figure, as well as the sword, and Holofernes is the smaller figure indicating that he isn't that important. The form is flat because there isn't an in depth background that seems like its mile and miles away, it's just a plain black background that stops the viewer from indicating something more to be
