The work that I am analyzing is Bathsheba After the Bath by Jan Steen (1626-1679). I believe the meaning of the painting shows exactly what women had to endure to be presented to a man of high royalty and had no rights in the matter to reject his advances. The gloomy colors in the painting correlates with the emotion that Bathsheba expresses. Examining the painting I found interesting props surrounding Bathsheba and the maidservants. The painting tells the story of how King David sent for Bathsheba.…
In the following essay I’m going to compare and contrast two 17th century artworks – “Las Meninas” by Diego Velazquez (1656) and “The Allegory of Painting” by Johannes Vermeer. Paintings depict artists working on a portrait, however, in Velasquez’s work the viewer is the person who is being painted and in Vermeer’s the viewer is just an observer of the artistic process. The only reason the observer knows that he is the center object of the future fictional painting is in the mirror on the back wall. The couple in the reflection is King Philip IV and his wife, Mariana. (Foucault, 8).…

The Russian Bride’s Attire is a life-sized oil painting by the Russian artist Konstantin Makovsky that is currently hanging in the Legion of Honor. At 110 x 147 inches, the piece pulls you in; as if you could step right into it and begin helping the ladies prepare the bride for marriage, or maybe bust her out of there. Makovsky is telling a subtle story through the composition and subject of this painting. The amount of emotion he brings with his angles and use of light and color is breath taking. He’s telling the story of a young girl who is set to be married off to the king, although this may sound glamourous, the girl looks unhappy, and no wonder; she’s a teenager preparing for marriage, preparing to leave behind her family and everything…
Macduff becomes angry and stops mourning and starts thinking about fighting Macbeth. His masculine role returns and he is willing to fight to the death in order to bring justice to his family. Many could argue that the character’s in this play strictly stick with their socially acceptable gender roles. They could say that Lady Macbeth was just simply “acting in the moment”, therefore her gender shouldn’t be questioned in that particular scene.…

His monumental work The Execution of Lady Jane Grey was one of the most familiar and enduring images of his time, and remains today among the most popular paintings in the National Gallery. Throughout history, artists have depicted women to uphold different ideals of beauty that directly correlated with the world around them. The Bust of Queen Nefertiti, depicting the grace and power of a dominant Egyptian queen that corresponds with both the views of women as well as idealized beauty of the Amarna period; the Venus of Urbino, a piece that portrays the ideals of beauty, of the Renaissance that still remains fairly unknown in purpose and depiction; and Judith Slaying Holofernes, picturing the high levels of drama as well as the overwhelming authority of the Catholic church common within the Baroque period through the portrayal of a strong and heroic woman. Though from different times, all of these works reflect upon the artistic…
It was more common to see paintings and drawings of women in domestic settings, cooking, taking care of children, and many other regular activities. Mount breaks the norm with this image, even including a male figure admiring from behind rather than also sketching with her. It expresses a newly found change in gender roles. Where most paintings were made by men and, if present, would depict the artist himself. This piece, however, was not only made by a man but depicted the female figure creating the art rather than the male figure.…
