Every year in the United States, more than 800,000 young women become pregnant and 85% of these pregnancies are unintended ("Unintended Pregnancy in the United States"). Thus, to prevent unwanted pregnancies, there is the plan B pill. The plan B pill is an emergency contraceptive that is taken 72 hours after having unprotected sex. This pill has been made available over the counter for women. Yet, whether or not the plan B pill should be available over the counter to underage girls has created controversy. This is an issue because there is no need for teenagers to obtain parental consent to purchase the pill. However, underage girls should have access to plan B pills over the counter because a minor 's rights are protected, teen sexual activity will decrease due to its availability, and abortions and unwanted pregnancies will decrease.
