The piano lesson was about a man that needs to learn a lesson, a woman that is passionate about keeping the family piano in the house and a piano. The piano had a strong impact on their family. In this book Bernice saw the importance of the piano she did not neglect it. Bernice would play the piano knowing it would call her ancestors to drive Sutter's ghost away. Bernice does not want to sell that piano because she knows that if she does that the only connection that she has with her family would be gone. She is passionate about keeping it, even though she does not play it. Bernice was both strong and week.
