In the play The Piano Lesson by August Wilson, I believe that Berniece is correct in the battle over the piano. Berniece, an older African-American woman, refuses to sell her family’s valuable piano because of the legacy it holds. To begin, Boy Willie, Berniece’s brother, comes to visit. Upon his arrival, he immediately mentions that he wants to sell the piano, but Berniece shuts down his plan and asks him to go home if that’s the sole reason he came to visit. I would react in a similar manner if I were faced with the same dilemma as Bernice, for family heirlooms are important for honoring your ancestors.
