During this conversation we discussed his protocol for observations and what he is looking for while in classrooms. Mr. Walker provided me with the observation form that is used in Wythe County Public schools. When I delivered the teaching session, the experience was an overall success with students showing a clear interest and engaging in the lesson (Table 1, question 10, mean 4.3). The teaching began with a clear introduction to the key learning points for the whole session (Table 1, question 5, mean 4.3), which allowed the students to understand what the session was going to entail. This was beneficial to those who needed to see the big picture to see how topics fit together[1]. I further explained that the session will be split into three sections and explained that certain learning outcomes will be covered in each section. Student feedback stated that there was “enthusiastic teaching in appropriate sized teaching bites.”…

Flinn’s classroom. Smooth transitions increase the time teachers are able to instruct and decrease the number of behavior management problems that occur. When I observed on Wednesday, Mrs. Flinn did a great job of preparing the students in advance for the transitions by giving them 5 and 10 minute warnings, signaling for student attention, bringing the activity to a close, telling the students exactly what needed to be done, prompting those off task, providing feedback, and beginning something new when everyone was ready. Also, I saw the importance of teaching functions (daily reviews/prerequisite checks, presentation of new content, guided practice, independent practice, and weekly/monthly reviews.) When students were doing math on Thursday morning, Mrs. Flinn began by doing a short review of the previous lesson.…

On Tuesday, November 14, I taught my second math lesson to Mrs. Beach’s fourth grade class. This experience was very unique compared to the first lesson that I taught because Mrs. Beach had a substitute. Thankfully, I kept this in mind and tried to anticipate behavioral issues that would be present because there was a substitute in the classroom. Nevertheless, I felt as though this lesson went way better than the first one, simply because I felt more comfortable with the topic that I was teaching. Furthermore, I kept all of the feedback in mind from teaching my first lesson, so that this lesson could be better.…
