When observing a special education classroom I am not only observing the class, but I am observing a glimpse into my future as a teacher. I was privileged enough to observe a multi-needs intermediate classroom with students who range from eight to ten year olds at Hope D. Wall School who have moderate to server learning disorders and physical handicaps. The purpose of the multi-need classroom is for the teacher to assess which path the student will take after the year is over. For an example some students might need more intensive guidance during their education, while other students attend life skills classes in order to prepare for life outside of school. While I was observing the class, I was fortunate enough to witness the students participate …show more content…
An opening is an aid for teachers in order to get the students ready for the day and eager to learn. My teacher prepared me that her students fill out a daily assignment every morning together as a class, I was eager to see how the students reacted to their daily lesson. As a class, the students were participating, dancing and really enjoying the opening lesson. The first part of the opening was when the cooperating teacher had an interactive way in order to take attendance, as well as going over the classroom rules such as keeping their hands to themselves, listening, and respecting others. After the students completed the first task of the opening, they began to go around the room answering questions such as what was the weather, the day of the week, or which month we were in. Since the classroom has multi-needs students the teacher had a variety of methods in order for the students to participate while answering the questions, such as little notecards with pictures, words, communication I-pads, or switches that have the answers recorded on the device. The class was very interactive while participating in this activity, they were dancing to the music, laughing, looking outside in order to see the weather, and overall enjoying the start of the school

Recently I did my observation at Chime Institute 's Schwarzenegger Community School in a first-grade class that consisted of about twenty students both those of who have disabilities and do not. These students are typically six years old and at the time there was one teacher and one assistant who led the class. In the classroom, there was also one paraprofessional for the student with special needs. The mother of the child was also there guiding her daughter and helping with any questions the paraprofessional had regarding her daughter 's needs. For the majority of my observation, I was in a class setting…

I saw inclusion, I saw different resources being used. I saw emotions explored but also be redirected in a way that a child with a disability may understand. I also observed the reasoning for choosing Early Intervention, which are developing ways and strategies to support the classroom teaching staff, how to coop with a variety of situations that may occur, and ways to support a child’s learning experience through Early…

Over winter break, I had the opportunity to work as a substitute preschool teacher at the Jewish Community Center of Columbus Ohio. I was placed in the Turtle Room, the classroom for two to three year olds. Since a large part of the student population is Jewish, the preschool cafeteria only provided Kosher foods. I distinctly remember one day talking to the lead teacher in the classroom, Amanda about how one little boy, Henry would never eat his lunch or snacks. Henry would stick to only the foods that he knew like mandarin oranges or carrots and that was all he would eat.…

In the Pre-K classroom that I observed it consisted of several different centers for the children to participate in, such as: block area, dramatic play, art, library, sand/water table, music/movement, sensory area, finger painting, play dough, and the students got the opportunity to make their own snacks. Not only did the students get to participate in centers, they had the opportunity each day to go outside and play on the playground as well as having an interactive lecture every morning at circle time and when the students sat down at their tables to do their daily worksheet. I believe that the Pre-K class I observed was a mix between traditional teaching as well as constructivism, creating a balance between the two. In the morning during circle time, the teacher would “lecture” the students with the letter of the day, go over the date, months, days of the week, shapes, and the numbers up to the date it currently was.…

In addition, I plan to always give my students a “heads up” about what is going on. If the schedules, routines, and transitions are planned beforehand and students know what to expect, I will be setting myself up for a classroom with much greater success. Lastly, I was again reminded of the importance of relationships. In my own classroom someday, I will strive to develop connections with each and every one of my students. If this is done, managing my classroom will come much more easily.…
