A pearl is very beautiful, the way it is shaped like a perfect sphere, no bumpy edges, and the best ones are very hard to find, which cost more than a regular pearl. John Steinbeck, the famous American author, wrote the novela The Pearl. In The Pearl, Kino finds a pearl, that is the most beautiful thing he has ever seen. Kino says that it is worth more than anything, but the pearl is worth nothing and later on he finds out the pearl brings bad things into his instead of all the things he was seeing in this pearl. Throughout the book, Kino changes what is important in life as he copes by resolving his internal conflicts. In the beginning of the book, the things that are important to him are his family and his boat. “It was at once property and a source of food, for a man with a boat can guarantee a woman that she will eat something”(Steinbeck, 14). This shows that Kino’s boat is really important to him. This also shows that Kino will do anything for the boat. “Juana sang softly an ancient song that had only three notes and yet endless variety of interval. And this was part of the family song too “(Steinbeck, 3). This shows that even though it is a couple words to Juana and Kino it feels like a whole song. The family song is important to them, because it keeps them together through thick and thin.
