In the novella Juana plays a huge role in the plot. In LaPaz, Juana’s family needs money to hire a doctor for her son. Her husband finds a pearl to sell and get money for the doctor. Since finding the pearl a lot of bad luck is happening to her and her family. She attempts to convince her husband to get rid of the pearl and tries to throw it away, but she can’t. In The Pearl by John Steinbeck, Juana is represented as a strong female because she is portrayed as intuitive, strong-willed, and maternal.
To begin, in The Pearl Juana is intuitive. In Juana and Kino’s brush house in La Paz Coyotito was stung by a scorpion. Juana’s first reaction was to help Coyotito and suck the poison out. “But Juana had the baby in her arms now...She put her lips
