Coyotito Symbolism Quotes

When Kino and Juana’s baby, Coyotito, is stung by a scorpion they go to the doctor for help, but the doctor turns them away. Kino finds the “pearl of the world,” and starts to wish for things for his family. Kino is attacked and his house is broken into and destroyed. During the attack Kino stabs and kills an intruder. They head for the capital, and while they were in the mountains trackers hunted them down. Kino ended up killing three more men. In the end Coyotito was killed and Kino and Juana return to town and throws the pearl back into the sea. In The Pearl, Steinbeck uses “The poison sacs of the town began to manufacture venom, and the town swelled and puffed with the pressure of it.”, “He is an animal now, for hiding, for attacking, and he lived only to preserve himself for his family.”., and “... the Song of Evil, the …show more content…
“…the black distillate was like the scorpion, or like hunger in the smell of food…” is an example of that literary device, and it shows that the scorpion was like the darkness and greed of the town or the sense of hunger in the smell of food. Another example is “ ‘This pearl has become my soul,’ said Kino. ‘If I give it up, I shall lose my soul.’ ” This shows that Kino wants the pearl so much that he will die with the pearl; he must have it. “... ‘I will fight this thing. I will win over it. We will have our chance. His fist pounded the sleeping mat. No one shall take our good fortune from us’ …” is another example. It shows that he is so obsessed with the pearl that he would do anything to keep the pearl and its fortune.
