In a nation that is focused on finding more cheap, environmentally safe, and efficient energy sources, would they be willing to risk ruining necessities that are more important to its people, such as water, and their culture and beliefs? The Dakota Access Pipeline is a $3.7 billion project that was first proposed in 2014, and will be built by Energy Transfer Partners, who are a Texas-based natural gas and propane company. The pipeline’s main purpose would be to carry about 470,000 barrels of crude oil per day from North Dakota to Illinois. It would also serve as a key conduit that would connect oil wells in North Dakota’s oil wells in North Dakota’s Bakken Shale, an oil-rich area in North Dakota and is a spot where the development of fracking has given billions of gallons of new oil sources to recovery, and other valuable consumers, such as the Gulf Coast, Midwest, and East Coast. Dakota Access, who is the project developer, believe that by building the pipeline, the United States will become less dependent on imported energy from unstable areas of the world, and that a pipeline would be the safest, most-cost effective, and environmentally-safe way to move crude oil, by straying away from the use of railroads and trucks. However, the thousands of protesters, which include the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe in Fort Yates, North Dakota, environmentalist groups, celebrities, and others, seem to disagree.
