Experiment 1: Observing The Familiar The skill of keen observation is vital in all educational subjects and in all aspects of life. The ability to describe and learn from observations undoubtedly results in a more educated, insightful, and inquisitive outlook. In science, observation is essential to the analytical process and in the findings of solutions for the world’s most perplexing issues. During this experiment an observation was conducted of a single ice cube in water. While confounding, this particular experiment –as is promised by observations of all types- certainly provided some interesting results when employing the five senses of sight, touch, hearing, smell, taste, and even when noting emotional states of the observer. I tasted the crisp, cool water and found myself thirsty. I continued to observe the interaction of the ice and the water and noted the ice cube did not seem to move in the water as expected. Small beading began to accumulate on the exterior of the glass at around twelve minutes and my impatience grew. At this point I seemed to create things which could be observed. I observed the ice from above and noted my breath creating ripples in the water which caused the ice to change position. The ice appeared to become more transparent at eighteen minutes of observation and had also decreased greatly in size. Although it is logical to assume that the volume of the water would increase as the ice changes from water’s solid form to its liquid, I was unable to notice any change in the volume of water in the …show more content…
I begrudgingly realized I was completing the experiment correctly and resumed my observation of the ice cube by placing a second ice cube into the glass of water. There was an audible sound as the second cube was placed into the water and I was surprised to find the same crackling noise resulting from the temperature differences did not occur with the second cube as it had the first. The tiny air bubbles present during the observation of the first ice cube were not nearly as frequent and immediate. At approximately thirty minutes of observation time I became increasingly frustrated and impatient and began to focus less on the importance of physical observation using my senses, and more of what the importance of the meaning of such as assignment could
