Experiment: Observing The Familiar

Experiment 1: Observing The Familiar The skill of keen observation is vital in all educational subjects and in all aspects of life. The ability to describe and learn from observations undoubtedly results in a more educated, insightful, and inquisitive outlook. In science, observation is essential to the analytical process and in the findings of solutions for the world’s most perplexing issues. During this experiment an observation was conducted of a single ice cube in water. While confounding, this particular experiment –as is promised by observations of all types- certainly provided some interesting results when employing the five senses of sight, touch, hearing, smell, taste, and even when noting emotional states of the observer. Initially, …show more content…
I tasted the crisp, cool water and found myself thirsty. I continued to observe the interaction of the ice and the water and noted the ice cube did not seem to move in the water as expected. Small beading began to accumulate on the exterior of the glass at around twelve minutes and my impatience grew. At this point I seemed to create things which could be observed. I observed the ice from above and noted my breath creating ripples in the water which caused the ice to change position. The ice appeared to become more transparent at eighteen minutes of observation and had also decreased greatly in size. Although it is logical to assume that the volume of the water would increase as the ice changes from water’s solid form to its liquid, I was unable to notice any change in the volume of water in the …show more content…
I begrudgingly realized I was completing the experiment correctly and resumed my observation of the ice cube by placing a second ice cube into the glass of water. There was an audible sound as the second cube was placed into the water and I was surprised to find the same crackling noise resulting from the temperature differences did not occur with the second cube as it had the first. The tiny air bubbles present during the observation of the first ice cube were not nearly as frequent and immediate. At approximately thirty minutes of observation time I became increasingly frustrated and impatient and began to focus less on the importance of physical observation using my senses, and more of what the importance of the meaning of such as assignment could

Only one item was used; therefore, it was impossible to know if the experiment had internal reliability. Nevertheless, there existed problem with the cold pressor test. A study had shown that due to the differences in the temperature of the ice water, the test lack standardization (Mitchell, 2004). In the MythsBuster experiment, the participants all put their hand in the same ice bowl, and the water was described as slightly above freezing temperature. Since the ice melted in contact with heat from the hands, the people performed the procedure later might experience a higher temperature compare to those prior to them.…

What makes a good observation? When making an observation, one would need to gather enough information to be able to fully describe what was observed. The details gathered would cover all areas of the action observed: what was seen, heard, touched, tasted, how it made one feel and can the reader relate to what is being described. In The Old Man Isn’t There Anymore, Kellie Schmitt created an effective observation by using sensory details, appeal to the reader’s emotion using pathos, and relating her experience in China to experiences in the United States.…

Last week in science class we worked on a lab called the Big Freeze. The objection of the project was to make a cooler and try to keep a block of ice frozen for 24 hours. For my cooler, I used a cardboard box, and put my ice container right in the middle of it and taped it down. Then I put bubble wrap on top of the ice container. After that I put a layer of aluminum foil on the bubble wrap and then put cotton balls and extra styrofoam on top of the foil.…

Although scientific experiments have indicated that an anecdote known as the Boiling Frog Syndrome is not necessarily true, it provides a wonderful example of how incremental changes in an environment can go undetected until disaster strikes. To no one’s surprise, a frog placed in boiling water will jump out immediately. However, the same frog placed in cold water will succumb to the environment if the water is gradually brought to a boil over a period of time. This is the result of failing to perceive the continuous danger around them.…

This Ritual Observation Project will be discussing my observations at Saint Teresa of Avila Catholic Church. I went there on June seventh to gain insight first hand into the Catholic Church’s rituals and beliefs. I will begin by breaking down the entire mass that took place during my observation then I will compare and contrast Catholicism to Baptist Christianity (my religion). When I first entered the area where the mass was to be held at, I began to notice the exquisite detail and the Stations of the Cross, which shows Jesus’ crucifixion. The pictures that show the fourteen Stations of the Cross can be found in my Saint Teresa of Avila Catholic Church PowerPoint presentation.…
