Taking place in Rome and Britannia during 70 AD, after the reign of political chaos of the Year of the four emperors, Lindsey Davis uses this historical fiction novel to focus on the series of events of Marcus Didius Falco. Considered to be an amateur private informer during this time, Falco’s sleazy reputation with a sense of strong justice ultimately depicts his un-success and need of funds. However, Falco runs into a complicated issue as the fiction novel shifts toward a mysterious standpoint, thus shaping our protagonist to mature and add experience to his disqualification as a private informer. With the Roman Empire under fire by the tenure of unwanted civil wars and various emperors the past year, corruption and political overtone linger throughout Rome.…
Overall, Bradbury has a very unique style that pulls the reader into the book. Although the book has a rather fast pace, the reader still understands the book, and it connects to the…
In Citizen By Claudia Rankine, Rankine exposes the nature of oppression and racism that many individuals of color face on a daily basis. Rankine emphasises both “macro” and “micro-aggressions”, implying that racism can manifest in both direct and subtle ways. Throughout the book, Rankine analyses specific events poetically, using figurative and rich language to dwell deeper into the experience of what it is like to be racially oppressed in a predominately “white background”. Throughout the book, I was particularly intrigued by Rankine's use of the second person present, which is often reserved for works of fiction.…
As time fades into history all aspects of life change. The United States past is truly two different worlds compared to present day America. In Laurel Thatcher Ulrich’s, A Midwife’s Tale the drastic difference between women now compared to women during the erection of the United States is shown through the journals of Martha Ballard. The journals take place between 1785-1812 right in the thick of the creation of the United States. Laurel Thatcher uses the journal excerpts to show what it was like to be a woman back when men ran almost every aspect of life during this time.…
The last reason why John Proctor had a moral awakening was because he died to save his community from persecution. People in the puritan community in Salem saw John Proctor as a good honest person, and if John Proctor was to say that he had practiced witchcraft the whole community would believe him. If the whole community thought that the whole witchcraft thing was real then that would only enable the law to abuse their powers further and murder more people. John Proctor wouldn’t just stand aside and watched as his whole community was murdered just to save his own skin and be considered a witch for the rest of his life. So he took a brave stand and stood up for what he knew was true.…
In the movie, “The Blind Side”, Michael Orr writes in his paper: “Any fool can have courage. But honor, that 's the real reason for you to either do something or you don 't. It 's who you are and maybe who you want to be”. In John Proctor and Peter Appleton’s case, they both had the courage to stand up to society, but their true honor revealed when they stood up for what they believed in, and whom they wanted to be. Both of the films’, “The Crucible” and “The Majestic”, main characters struggle whether to choose what is ethically right or morally right, but either one they choose they would somehow face a consequence.…
Your grandfather’s Alzheimer’s has progressed to such a degree that his mental capabilities are no more than those of a lab rat. Scientists are in need of test subjects, so your grandpa is shipped off to a facility where they test unregulated amounts of drugs, makeup, and shampoos on him. R. G. Frey uses this example of testing on cognitively impaired humans throughout his piece, “Moral Standing, the Value of Lives, and Speciesism.”. This paper will outline Frey’s arguments on why human life generally has more value than animal life and highlight the exceptions to the rule that justify the mentioned scenario, while also presenting objections to the unequal value thesis and evaluating those oppositions with respect to humans with cognitive disabilities…
One thing I liked about the book was how Strub shared so many of his personal thoughts about the whole situation. Although some of details I believed to be unnecessarily graphic, it did allow the reader to completely analysis his logic. Over…
When a mention of the future is made, one might be enthralled over the plethora of groundbreaking technology which could exist by then, but to author Ray Bradbury, this is no source of excitement. In his novel, Fahrenheit 451, he sees past the benefits which technology brings forth and exposes its drawbacks. He notes how people have become addicted and overly reliant on technology, turning away from reading books which, in turn, cultivated their critical thought and individualism. Such a vision is undoubtedly astonishing; in looking at the developed societies of today, the effects of technology on the populaces so uncannily resemble those described by Bradbury in Fahrenheit 451, showing that the future which he so desperately tried to prevent…
The setting of the novel, Fahrenheit 451,by Ray Bradbury, is set in 2053 in a large nameless U.S. city. The place for this setting is not given directly from the author. The time of the book is during a time where they aren’t allowed to have books, which leaves them without knowledge. The mood of the book is sad and curiosity. The author is trying to make you feel how the characters are feeling.…
The author seems to have an inconsistent pace throughout the poems however, and he fails to establish connections in between the poems, leaving most of the details up to the reader’s imagination. All in all, I was not exactly fond of the entire book. As mentioned before, the author jumps from topic to topic without establishing a unifying theme or…
Morality is a particular system of values and principles of conduct held by one person or society. Each person has their own set of morals, and they can be influenced by things such as culture or other people. There is no universally right moral value system, and as far as morals go, there is no right or wrong. In The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, a man named Adolf Hitler persuaded the citizens of Germany that jewish people were a threat to their society. Adolf Hitler took control over Germany and established his Nazi government.…
A trolley is moving down a track. The trolley can not be stopped, but it a nearby switch is able to move the trolley from one track to another. One track has five people, and the other has one. Flipping the nearby switch will cause the one person to die while leaving the switch alone will mean the five people will die. The question is: what would you do?…
When tough decisions are brought up there is a thin line between right and wrong when it comes to morality. Morales are principles concerning the distinction between right and wrong or good and bad behavior. While we have been reading Richard Matheson’s novel, I Am Legend we have been discussing the morality of Robert Neville’s actions and decisions about his own survival. From one perspective, Neville must do whatever it takes to ensure his own survival and therefore his actions do not concern whether he is right or wrong as long as he lives. The other perspective would be that Neville does not only have to answer to himself for his actions, but others might consider him to be a monster without any morality that will kill and harm any creature.…
Google It The world may wonder how people ever survived without the Internet before it came into their lives. They have grown accustomed to the easiness the Internet provides. The work that used to take someone hours or even days and weeks to accomplish can be achieved within minutes. In the article “Is Google Making Us Stupid?”…
