Universal Studios: Company Analysis

A company’s mission states their purpose for existing and what they hope to accomplish as a company. In order for a company to be innovative, their mission must present society with something no one else has yet. Innovation comes from ideas which are often implemented through the use of technology. I plan to explore the missions of three companies; Netflix, Amazon, and Universal Studios, to see why they are on the listing of the World’s 50 Most Innovative Companies.
Netflix is an entertainment company which specializes in streaming movies and television shows as well as a mail DVD service. Their mission focuses on how they want to provide customers with the best streaming service. Netflix wants to expand their, “streaming subscription business

Universal Studios is one of Hollywood’s Big Six film studios. Their mission is to “provide an environment where their team members are proud to work, deliver unforgettable experiences to guests, and generate superior financial returns.” (“Life in Our Universe” n.d.) Universal succeeds in their mission through not only their movies, but also their theme parks. Harry Potter in Universal Studios Las Angeles recently opened with tremendous response from guests. They are not only making a decent profit, with a global box office of $6.9 billion this current year, but also outperforming guests’ expectations. (“Universal Studios” n.d.) I think that Universal Studios is an innovative company because of their strategic use of social media. Some examples of their social media endeavors are broadcasting red carpet events on Snapchat, creating a meme generator, and engaging with people on the writing community, Wattpad. (“Universal Studios” n.d.)Using social media as a way to gain an audience is an example of technological discontinuity. Technological discontinuity is a phase where a scientific advantage leads to a breakthrough in performance.
