Dictionaries have been created to understand the terminology service members use throughout wars. In the dictionaries contain slang, metaphors, weapon terminology, and jargon. it is striking to see that many military terms were quite humorous (Wilson). This could possibly have been used to offset some stress and tension of the military. Soldiers may use the word “diaper bag” for the word “bullet” to make things seem less dangerous or dark. New terminology is constantly being created in the military. This is because enemies can potentially learn the code words the military is using and attack them (Wilson). Each branch works to create their own terminology which leaves the other branches as outsiders because they lack knowledge of the code word meanings for other groups.
