After an “unfortunate” incident, where some patients were killed in a gruesome manner, at the beginning of the take of the hostages situation, Riley and Max realize there's so much more they don't know. They are together nearly every page, navigating the halls of the building they're trapped in after the masked men's plot goes from bad to worse. Max would have been the last person Riley thought she could count on, but he proves her entirely wrong.The only people they could to rely on was each other, so they try to work through it together. Throughout the situation, they would comfort each other when one has a mental break down, they would protect each other from attacks from the masked men, try to hide each other from the masked men, and stand by each other, and act as each other’s rocks through thick and thin. Riley and Max would also try to use humor as way to lessen the horrors of the situation. For example, a moment where Riley would call the three masked men,” the X-Files men” because of the way the men wore “the odd shaped alien masks”. They learn to trust one another and use their strengths, and from there deeper feelings start to grow. Though emotions are high, seeing Riley and Max interact, deepen their friendship, and refuse to be separated.
