The industry started when Frederick Weyerhaeuser invested in the lumber industry. He expanded his business in Minnesota to sawmills and small railroad lines. In 1890, he bought more than 200,000 acres of timberland in central Minnesota. Weyerhaeuser and his partners cut down acres of white pine. White pine was the best tree for lumber, because it was very tall (150 feet), and the straight trunks had no branches until you were high above the ground. The tall, strong trees were excellent for construction.
