The Lions Of Little Rock Essay

1. Discuss one or more themes in the novel. Is the theme directly stated or implied? Explain. There are a couple themes in my novel, The Lions of Little Rock. Both of these themes are universal and implied. One of the themes of my story, is: Don’t draw conclusions without reason. This is basically the “Don’t judge a book by its cover” theme, stated in a less corny way. In The Lions of Little Rock, the other characters are quick to judge Liz when she was caught passing for white. Marlee though, got to know Liz first, and was appalled by some of the other characters’ reactions. Sally, JT, Red, and many others quickly judged Liz without getting to know her first, Marlee was the only one who knew they were dead wrong. Another theme of my story is: Face your fears. This one is pretty corny too, but is seen throughout the whole novel. When Marlee took a ride on an airplane, she was terrified, but did it anyways. She ended up loving it! JT …show more content…
In the beginning of the story, Marlee’s mother didn’t have much character development and was rather flat. All we knew about her was that she and Marlee didn’t get along too well, and she was rather anti-integration. This immediately caught my attention, in a relatively pleasant story, meant to teach kids about the civil rights movement, there was an important figure who was anti-integration (Not to mention has daughter issues!) This definitely hinted towards some dramatic character development in the future. I was right, near the middle/end of the story, Mother’s character was changing. She went from anti-integration to joining a women's committee, whose goal was to reopen the school, integration or not. That committee even brought her much closer to her daughter. Seeing this character grow like that gave me satisfaction, like a proud parent. Marlee’s mother went from a flat character; to a round, dynamic

O’Brien, and another one that you can find is passing judgment. To begin with, a passage from the story that shows this theme is, “When he had first come, I had been so excited and apprehensive about the presence of any other person that I did not think too much about who Mr. Loomis was; he had seemed attractive and friendly. But since his recovery, I had felt that I did not understand him at all”(156). The example conveys that Ann has misjudged Mr.Loomis and realizes that it was better living without him. Likewise, the earlier quote regarding Mr. Loomis shooting Ann also shows the theme of passing judgment.…

How the theme that is said in this prompt can be incorporated into the novel is when things get shaky when the administration starts wondering about what caused the suspension of Philip Malloy. In the novel this happened especially when Philip became “world famous” just because of singing the National Anthem. What this resulted was not only getting his justice but he was also getting so many telegrams and letters sent to him just for some patriotism notice that people have in the states. Everyone in the whole United States knew what was going on. Ms. Narwin and the board was getting beaten up by the whole world since the teacher Ms. Narwin didn’t let Philip sing the national anthem.…

During this week’s reading, my eye was caught by the actions of then-Governor of Arkansas Orval Faubus in the wake of Brown v. Board of Education II (1955). Even as he felt pressures from both the judicial and executive branches of government, he refused to comply with the new standards of racial equality. In 1955, the Supreme Court issued a decision on the case that came to be known as Brown v. Board of Education II, ruling that states must immediately end any segregation in their school systems immediately. Not surprisingly, many states in the South fought this new regulation tooth and nail, but the textbook raised one particularly interesting case: Governor Orval Faubus.…

As we all know, the theme of a story is the lesson that is being taught throughout the novel. But a theme can also be the subject of a talk, a piece of writing, or a person's thoughts. All stories have a theme, but they may not always be directly stated. This requires readers to dig deep down into the text and analyze the lessons that they have acquired through the book. Between the two excerpts, "Angelas Ashes" and "The Street", there is common theme that perseverance is important when times get tough in life.…

In the stories Romeo And Juliet and Flowers For Algernon, one thing I struggled to do was find a common theme. It took me almost an hour, but after close examination I realized one huge common theme I seemed to be blatantly ignoring. That theme was that relationships with others, both with humans and animals, are bound to end. There is many different ways the authors showed these themes in their story, but the ways I will be focusing on is through foreshadowing in the storyline, stereotyping and generalization from both the authors and characters, and the conflict that the characters in the story face throughout their lives.…

Stones River National Battlefield While preparing for my visit to Stones River National Battlefield, I did some digging on the Internet and found out that the Battle of Stones River started on December 31, 1862. My preparation mainly involved reading about the site, especially its history and why it had been designated as a national historical site. The site was one among the many bloody civil war conflicts. The battle produced significant political and military benefits for the Union, but more importantly, it changed the individuals who fought and lived there forever (Giordano, Alberto, and Thomas, 56). The national battlefield was formed through efforts of private people, the Park and Stones River Battlefield Association, St. Louis Railway,…
