The Kingdom of Mathias was written by Paul E. Johnson and Sean Waters. The book takes place in 19th Century America and tells the story of Matthias, the Prophet and how he got people to follow him. People from all over became interested in the new religion that was started and began participating. The book seeks to explain the family life, economics, and sexual norms, and social class in Matthias’s Kingdom. The book, The Kingdom of Mathias, starts out explaining the nature of its followers. Elijah Pierson was his most dedicated follower and was not committed to the church until he married his wife, Sarah, who died shortly after. Together they tried to spread the word of God by becoming missionaries. At his wife’s funeral he believed he could raise her from the dead and claimed he heard the voice of God. The new Kingdom they created was called Mount Zion. Matthias had strong hold on everything that happened in this society. Marriage was practiced in what modern days would be like an open marriage. However, a lot of controversy came from this concept and it ended up turning people away from Matthias’s Kingdom. This story holds contemporary relevance because it talks about this rise of the Mormons and the idea of post-millennialism. This is the idea that Christ is going to come back to earth at the end of the 19th century, but a faith that is still very alive in our culture today.
