For my topic, I chose the issue of same-sex marriage. Same-sex marriage is a difficult topic in our society, with both sides zealously defending their opinions and there are many too afraid to speak in opposition due to the politically correct world we live in. Any discussion worth having, however, will be difficult and very strenuous at times. It is with this in mind that I will try to explain my views on this subject. I would like to begin by presenting you with a statistic which should not surprise you. The Pew Research Center reported that 55% of those surveyed in 2015 were in favor of same-sex marriages. I am in the controversial 45% who are not. In this paper, I will attempt to present my reason for opposing same-sex marriage and will also attempt to answer a few common arguments against my opinion. That is an increase of 20% since 2001, according to information available on their website. Those reporting that they oppose same-sex marriage have dropped 18% in the same timeframe. This illustrates that public opinion on same-sex marriage is rapidly shifting to a more welcoming attitude while some of the opposition of the past seems to be disappearing. Another statistic that I found interesting for such an important topic is the number of people who identify themselves as either homosexual or bisexual.
