One example she uses is of a story of a husband abusing his wife because she would not do what he told her to do. However, when she approached authorities to report the attack, they were not disinterested in her claims. This 1970’s example shows a husband that is coercive and attempting to control his wife. Modern women are becoming more vocal, obtaining more rights, and standing against inequality. Solnit is saying that hierarchical inequalities are what is wrong with many traditional families today. The rise of feminism has allowed women to proclaim that they should have the same rights as the man in a traditional marriage. In many traditional marriages, the husband is assumingly in higher ranking than his wife. This goes back to biblical times -- where men would work to provide for their families, while their wives stayed home, cleaned the household, and took care of the children. Though a husband’s duty is to still care and provide for his wife, times have changed. Women are moving up in the world by getting their own jobs and making their own money, proving to men that they can do whatever a man can and that they deserve equality in their marriage. Likewise, same-sex couples do not assume that one is the “husband” and one is the “wife” in order to maintain a healthy, coequal marriage. Overall, marriages in anyway, same-sex or traditional, should strive to be equal and
