LGBT stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender. It encompasses all of those who do not identify as heterosexual and those who don’t identify with the gender they were born with. As with all minority groups, they have been discriminated against since the beginning. Just like any other minority group, they are confronted by heavy amounts of hate and discrimination. Things like being verbally harassed, physically assaulted, and even murdered have been common problems they have had to endure. This more than often leads to things like homelessness and suicide. The places that this is most prevalent is either at their homes or school. All across the US there is an infamous reputation of families hating and disowning their children because they are LGBT. It then follows them to school where they have to face threats and harassment that can lead to self-destructive symptoms. LGBT discrimination is a problem that has too long been around and should be solved with appropriate solutions that allow healthy integration.
Bullying has become one of the most prevalent issues among today 's generation. One group in particular that suffers from this is the LGBT minority. It has been reported that LGBT students are twice as likely to be bullied than the non-LGBT students (Kimmel 2010). In a survey done by the GLSEN, it was reported that of the 7,898 LGBT students surveyed, 74.1% were verbally harassed because of their sexual orientation and 55.2% were verbally harassed because of…
