The Issue Of Gun Control Essay

1085 Words May 29th, 2015 5 Pages
Gun Control Why should anyone feel unsafe where they are? Many feel there is nothing wrong with holstering a gun for protection or just to feel safe, but you should have a permit, proper training and no criminal record. Forty-two states have shall-issue laws, meaning police do not have any power in issuing concealed weapon permits and eight states have may-issue laws allowing citizens to carry a gun as long as local authorities give them the permit. Carrying a concealed handgun in public is permitted in all fifty states as of 2013. Some states require gun owners to obtain permits while others do not require permits. People who support concealed carry, say that criminals are less likely to attack someone they believe is armed. They argue that most adults who legally carry a concealed gun are law-abiding and do not misuse their firearms. There are four different types of permits that vary from state to state. A no-issue means citizens are not allowed to carry a concealed handgun, may-issue, allows citizens to carry at the discretion of local authorities. The third category, shall-issue, requires police to issue the carry permits as long as the applicant meets certain requirements. The last category, unrestricted carry, means no permit is needed to carry a concealed handgun. The law on gun control should be the same in all of the states, U.S. citizens should be able to holster a handgun if they have a permit, proper training and no criminal record.
