The Controversy Of Banning Guns In The United States

Improved Essays
In recent years the united states has suffered through too many mass shooting events. After all the chaos has settled, people come to their senses and wonder how can a mentally ill person get their hands on a gun and kill 40 people within 7 minutes. I believe even gun owners and non gun owner wonder how this could happen. This is when people start arguing over gun control and whether it is a good or bad thing. It is very appealing to think that banning guns would end violence in our society. However, I don’t think that banning guns would solve any of these problems.
If the world was perfect and people respected each other’s right to live and people were not mentally ill, there would be no need for topics like gun control and terrorism. Unfortunately,

Just like we are responsibly capable of owning trucks that can inflict similar damage to a crowd of people (I am thinking of Nice, France). Yes, there have been bad shootings as a result of mentally unstable people but would banning guns fix that? I am not sure that is the answer. There are a lot of people that believe guns are a “God given right” and some even think that the 2nd amendment was put in place not to hunt but to keep our government from doing crazy things, like banning guns. The founder of this country suffered under the oppression of their government and they felt that guns were a necessity. Their are mentally stable gun owners that do think that mass shootings are crazy and should be stopped but they don't think that banning guns is the way to do that.
The solution to gun violence in america is complex. A simple solution like banning guns is very appealing but will not work. A good example of how this would fail is the Prohibition Era. During that time the simplistic approach was to ban all alcohol. This was a disaster and was quickly overturned. Prohibition turned law-abiding citizens into criminals and a billion dollar industry over to the mafia. I believe that a way to reduce gun violence in america is a combination community activism, mental health awareness and enforcing the laws already in place. This approach will not be easy and it will not be

The government constantly tries to avoid the problem of gun control, for example when tragedy happens the government quickly states that there is a problem with the gun control but never faces the problem straight on. The only way to fix the problem of people getting the guns to be completely disallowed in the United States, people should not be able to have gun unless you are an active police officer or part of the U.S. Army and you are actively are duty. Colonists had a reason for having guns they were threatened by the British and other countries once they got their government, but the people that live in the U.S. having all the protection they want with the police and the American army which is the best in the world. The U.S. motto is the land of the free which implies that you will be free of worrying about protection and hate. Mass shooting and gun ownership rates are highly correlated and “the higher the gun ownership rate, the more a country is susceptible to experiencing mass shooting incidents” (Phillip). The issue may not start with the gun owner. There are several occasions where the person that caused the shooting is not the person that owns the gun but instead someone else who should have known about the gun in the first place. People may have different opinions about the issue that guns does not make a safe environment because of the second amendment. The second amendment gives us the right to bear arms.…

People need to start understanding that guns are not safe and that it is just an easy way to get people killed. People should also come together and solve this situation by agreeing to have more regulations on guns without putting too many limits. Some ways that it can benefit both sides is having gun buyers go through an intense background check so that it can prevent mass shootings that has tragically killed so many people. Other ways is by banning certain magazine capacities, and “long guns” referring to assault rifles & shotguns because those are the weapons that can kill a lot of people in matter of seconds. By having these regulations, hopefully people can live in peace without losing loved ones to gun…

On one side you have those who are for gun control as gun violence has become a serious problem in America. On the other side of the coin you have American citizens who believe strongly in their right to bear arms as it is a staple of the rights all Americans are granted. In the US, there are roughly 283 million guns in civilian hands. Although this in and of itself does not seem particularly damaging or harmful to anyone, the amount of deaths because of these guns shows otherwise. It has been reported that over 30,000 people are killed each year as a result of gun violence, ⅓ of these deaths consist of people under the age of 20.…

The Constitution: Suppression of the 2nd Amendment “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not infringed.” This is the 2nd amendment, and it is under attack. Many people believe that guns are evil and need to banned from the general public. They look at countries such as Australia, Japan, and France to get there reasoning for strict gun control. Advocates for this type of thinking conclude that if America implements the same harsh gun regulations of other countries, then our gun violence rates will reflect theirs.…

In the United States in more recent years there has been a lot of debate on gun control due to events like the most recent school shooting. Both sides, Democratic and Republican, have argued for and against two very radical solutions: increasing gun control to the point of taking away guns from everyone that is not military or police, and arming teachers across the country. While both of these solutions have their benefits and flaws, one very important aspect of the active shooter epidemic seems to be overlooked, and that is the mental state of these people that will eventually turn into active shooters. When looking at the mentality of these people, there are two parts of the issue that are rarely addressed when trying to find a solution,…

The subject that I have chosen is very controversial, considering the recent events of the past few years. The topic that I have chosen to do my research paper over is Gun Control. First I want to say that I am against Gun Control and it 's entirety, also I believe it impedes on our 2nd Amendment rights. Many obstacles have been placed to bring up the discussion over Gun Control, but one question ponders the mind, will the banning of guns really deter the rate of crime? Most people may know what the recent Gun control laws detail, but for those unfamiliar with them I will explain.…

If we want to stop guns and the feeling of unsafeness, we need to correct our societal mentality. Therefore, we should have extensive psychological tests used frequently on every one that owns a gun and make sure they are mentally stable under stressful situations. Yes, there are people who are sick, and this is why background checks are also important. Obama recently stated, “He will increase access to mental health services,” and under the Brady Bill (1993), criminal background checks should be performed to every single person before buying a hand gun. I believe we should all think of ourselves as protectors of our communities, and you should not take away citizens’ rights of owning a…

Despite the gun control controversy being such a complicated issue, there are sensible solutions to each of the problems. These solutions should be made in the areas on mental health in the United States, gun safety requirements, and limitations of gun firepower. To begin solving the problem, the U.S. needs to begin to fund the area of mental health again. In recent years, mental health facilities just have not had the funds to properly execute their jobs. This funding will likely keep the people that do not have control over themselves (for medical reasons) out of the gun equation.…

On an average day in the United States 93 americans are killed by gun violence. There are also 1000’s of cases that involve a child being injured or killed by a stray bullet every year. Does this mean that guns are dangerous or does it mean we are using guns for the wrong intention? There are many reasons people use guns but like everything else some people use it for good and some for evil. Since the United States can't take away all of our guns I feel there should be some guns you should be able to purchase at your local store for self-defense or hunting and there are also some guns in which you should go through heavy background checks to be able to purchase.…

    Why Should Guns Be Banned

In America, there is a growing perception that guns are: they are harmful, they kill, and they commit crimes, and so most guns should be banned. But, how can a gun kill or commit crimes; it is not a living thing, it is a tool. With the use of guns, America has grown to be a strong and independent country throughout history. The push to ban guns will only keep guns away from law abiding citizens since criminals, by nature, do not follow laws and respect the gun free zones. The banning of guns in America should end.…

The fear of guns and people who carry them isn’t fair to anyone, I think people should try to understand how guns work and why people have them, for every person and gun is different, and educating people about both will likely make them less afraid. In my experience guns are not easy to use or to get; you need to go through safety courses, pass background tests, learn how to load, hold it, and aim. The people I know who have guns aren’t trigger happy men at all, they were educated and skilled men and women who saw guns as a means of protection, providing for their family, or a form of art. Gun ownership doesn’t make one violent at all--as many seem to assume-- a gun is simply a tool and has no moral influence on others. In fact, arming civilians gives them a chance to defend themselves and even stop a potential shooter than means to do harm: meaning criminals are less likely to fire upon a room full of people if they know one or more are potential gun…

Mental health is one of the biggest problems facing the world today. Lives have been lost through improper treatment of unstable individuals time and time again through mass shootings and other tragedies. Guns are often blamed as the culprit for these attacks but I disagree. While stronger gun control could help lessen the effects of mass shootings, it's not solving the common problem these shootings have in common with each other, the shooter is almost always a mentally unstable person. Banning the weapon a person uses won't make as much of a difference because if the person is unwell, they will just use other means to accomplish their goals.…
