Should Students Grade Their Teachers

“Education is just starting to figure out what measurement actually means, five years ago we thought test scores were the answer to everything. We’re offering a way to focus on the right metrics.” said Aaron Feuer, Panorama’s co-founder and chief executive. Students spend most of the time with their teachers so why not have students grade their teachers. Studies show that poor school environments are strongly linked to poor test scores, low graduation rates, low attendance rates, and student disconnection. Poor school environments include low levels of teacher enjoyment, high rates of teacher departure and low academic expectations. The whole aspect of the environment is through our teachers. Schools need to listen to their students and start to value students opinions. The most important thing teachers should be doing is to make sure to ask the students for their insights and observations about the teachers that administration might miss. A lot of students feel they don’t an opportunity to express their feeling and emotions. It is true that every single student in the classroom can not be satisfied but they should be. The students should understand the teacher 's way of teaching and have a good relationship with the teacher. How the grading system would work is it would be a lot like a questionaire asking the students about the teacher and what they 're good at and what they can improve on. The questionnaires will be at the end of all tests when the students see it on the test and quizzes they will realize you really wanna know. Teachers can ignore all the immature comments students are saying to try to be funny and you do have the name of who wrote the immature comments because it’s on the back of the test and quizzes so you can address it quickly. The questionnaire would be short and concise it will be designed to identify the positive teachers as well as the poor teachers. It would have a space for comments and students should be asked how their class can improved. In reviewing the comments you will get an idea of what your students think. They will get feedback and can learn what they can do to help students be successful. Teachers can learn to dilate to all different styles of teaching because every class is different. The teachers will find out things they didn’t even know they were doing through the evaluations. Through the evaluations teachers will have a huge opportunity to improve their teaching skills that will be a benefit for all. 33% of fourth graders are not reading at grade level and about one quarter of public high school students do not graduate on time or even at all. They say the student grading teacher system will help districts identify the best and the worst teachers. Grading teacher studies have shown a significant increasing weight to students performance on standardized tests. The education commission of the states say 30 states require that evaluations including evidence of student achievement on tests. Teachers build students so it is very important that a student is built right with the right leader they can build a even better leader. The teacher influence on the students is one of the most important things. The teacher 's behavior in a classroom is what students see and learn from. The good teachers should be recognized and are the key to improving student achievement. Good teaching isn’t motivating them to learn but teaching them how to learn and it needs to be relevant, meaningful and

Students are smarter than a grade on their report card! In some schools students are given complete anecdotal evaluations instead of report card grades, where the teachers give written comments and they have a meeting. A large group of people agree for reasons such as how it will boost student’s confidence or how grades put extra pressure on a student. Some also agree grades don't completely measure everything that a student is capable of, and some say grades make students lazy.…

Ever since the beginning of education, grades have been the key procedures for teachers and professors to explain the student’s strengths and weaknesses in each assignments. Whether it was the A, B, C, D, and F method or the 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 method, the grading rubric has always been a major technique for schools, and how each student had progressed over the semester. From Education Digest’s article, “The Case Against Grades,” author, Alfie Kohn, a novelist in the matters of education, claims that any sort of grading system in education ultimately leads to students focusing more on the grades rather than on the subject at hand. With that, Kohn believes grades “diminish students’ interests in whatever they’re learning,” “create a preference…

A teacher go through evaluations based on how effective they are teaching the material to their students. The thing that are reviewed to determine that is test scores. This is linked to the way they are getting pay. Teachers are paid on merits meaning that they are paid off of the student performance. Merit pay is barely used anywhere in the workforce. Those teachers that don’t get the score are said to be underperformed and more likely to be fired. The reason why these is that way to motivate the teachers to perform well. Those teachers who are doing really well are more likely to receive a bonuses. So no grade no pay. The assumption that teachers have to constantly prove themselves that they can do their job…

The topic of the article explains it all, “How Grading Reform Changed”, this article discusses just that. Mooney says that “Several districts that have been a part of the pilot program testing evaluation models have included or plan to include students surveys, although not necessarily part of a teacher’s grade.” David Pawlowski, the principle of the Alexandria Middle School does not believe all students have enough “knowledge about pedagogy to evaluate teachers.” In Alexandria, teachers are required to help students develop self-evaluations. Mooney believes that this could be a problem.…

Long provides us with this evidence when she states, “In Colorado, districts want to get rid of ‘D’s’ in their grading systems. In Virginia, there are efforts to standardize what an ‘F’ signifies. In an Iowa district, letter grades on report cards are supplemented by more frequent teacher feedback focused on priorities” (long). Long provides this to explain how states across the United States are not sure how to measure the learning curve. Long, believes that these states cannot accurately measure their students’ progress with just letter grades. These states believe that letter grades should be abolished and start leaning to a student based assessment sheet. The student based assessment sheet is the teacher’s comments on how the student is progressing in the class, based on the student’s skills in each area. Long goes on when she quoted this from Kohn, “That’s why the best teachers and schools replace grades (and grade-like reports) with narrative reports – qualitative accounts of student performance – or, better yet, conferences with students and parents.” (Long). Long, quotes this because this became a real issue and more and more states tried to attempt…

I'm Jennifer Bardon and I attend Washington Middle School. I feel strongly that teachers should be graded on how well they teach. Its only fair that students get to do this because schools are all about equal opportunities. The technique each individual teacher has to teaching varies. It's evident that every student has a teacher that they like more or less and sometimes there's large quantities of students that prefer a teacher more than any of the other ones.…

Just because this way of teaching and grading works doesn't mean it's the best option. School teacher Sarah Myers said “Standardized testing is rough with grading because it forces every kid to learn at the same rate.” (Johnson). There’s not many ways around standardized test every kid in the U.S. has to take them and if you skip these test you will not be successful. Standardized testing isn’t the only problem. It's how the teachers teach, the way schooling is taught is simply passing on information with nothing behind it said by Professor of Education Dennis hayes “In the current climate, the true meaning of education has been lost. In its purest form, education is the simple means of passing knowledge and understanding on to a new generation.” (Hayes). Schools are less concerned with teaching kids how to make eternal goals external and more focused on passing the same information they have been teaching for…

Rather than the teacher grading our students, the students could grade themselves. Students could also write a reflection on their work. If students were to grade themselves and also write a reflection I think that they could see their progression, but also be able to pick up on things that they might need to work on. I know that when I take time to personally reflect on my own work I gain more insight as to just receiving a grade for my work. If I were to go a step further I think that an effective strategy would be to meet with students periodically and discus with them how they feel that they are doing and things that we could help them work on. It shows students that you as the teacher care about their…

There are many different methods of assessment that teachers can use. One form of assessment is constructed response. This method requires students to answer a question in their own words. This allows students to display what they know and allows them to use writing skills. One thing a teacher can do while using this assessment method that will have a positive consequence for students is aligning it to content or knowledge. The teacher should choose a learning objective and create a question that will reflect what they want students to know. The constructive response question should be aligned with the learning objective. This allows students to communicate their knowledge in writing. Another teacher action that could help make this assessment positive is to provide students with detailed feedback on their constructive response. This means explaining to students what they did right and what could be worked on and explaining why they got the score they did. This allows students to know how they can improve and know exactly why they received a certain score. This can help students in future…

To help this situation, the first recommended step would be the purchase of tablets for the school district’s administrators. Although this may be a bit more expensive, extensive results are predicted. Every two weeks administrators would be able to step into classrooms to perform evaluations in fifteen minute blocks. Ten minutes would be spent to observe and listening to the teacher conduct class. This would include taking notes. Then five minutes would be spent to type up and then email the results to the teacher. By using the tablets, administrators don’t have to go back to the office and try to remember from just notes, they can type up their feedback in the moment and move on to the next teacher right away. They will be more able to understand what they are doing correctly, giving them a sense of accomplishment. This method will also tie into employee positive reinforcement.…

Grades are supposed to tell you how smart you are, right? No. They don’t tell you how smart you are. The school grading system just holds you to a standard. I’ve always been bad at school. It made me feel worse about myself. Like I wasn’t as smart as everyone else. I didn’t have that help at home. I kinda just had to tough it out and pay attention in class. If the school grading system got abolished, students’ would have more opportunity. “Grades can only really be experienced as a reward or punishment”(Alfie Kohn). Grades only encourage competition rather than collaboration. The school grading system should be abolished because grades don’t determine your future and abolishing grades would improve students’ self esteem, and remove the achievement…

It’s hard to let students learn from their failures when failing could possibly mean less funding. Without funding a school would be left in a situation where resources are thinly stretched which would not be conducive for a learning environment. Focusing on instilling knowledge is preferable, however, students are under pressure from teachers and administrators to attain high scores. Thus, this disconnect between what teachers are telling students about acquiring knowledge and emphasizing high scores is confusing for students. Orlando’s assessment would be best integrated by instructors if the school system as a whole shifted focus from grade performance to knowledge acquisition. Until it is, his suggested reforms would be impractical. By eliminating the idea of competitive national scores, Orlando’s methods of using a positive-negative feedback model would inevitably lead to higher scores as the knowledge would be absorbed with higher comprehension. However, these higher scores may increase more slowly than a grade based model where a student has learned to give answers that are…

This is teacher friendly model and step by step approach for observation to improve inter-rater reliability. Moreover, evaluation factor focuses the teacher use of instructional strategies and students’ learning is also monitored. He also designed an evaluation tool to measure the success of highly effective teachers. According to Marzano, effective teachers set their goals before teaching. They have clear understanding about teaching methodologies according to students’ needs. Teachers give feedback to students for further improvement. He also suggests that teachers should help students when they are learning new information by chunking smaller sections and then checking for understanding, using media, making predictions, and responding in writing. In this way, more students will retain the knowledge for longer period. This model also improves accuracy of scoring. Furthermore, this scoring criterion helps to support teacher growth and improve fairness. Meaningful teacher evaluation involves an accurate appraisal of the effectiveness of teaching, its strengths and areas for development, followed by feedback, coaching, support and opportunities for professional…
