In 1992, a study held in Indiana University showed that “graduates of the D.A.R.E program subsequently had significantly higher rates of hallucinogenic drugs use than those not exposed to the program” (“Was D.A.R.E Effective?”). The statement is indicating that those who learned about drugs at a young age with the help of a local uniformed police officer, which their role in the program is to teach the children about drugs prevention, often shows the built up of curiosity carrying along with them throughout the years. As the children ages, they are more likely to try experimenting gateway drugs such as marijuana than those who does not acknowledge about drugs. A psychologist that goes by the name of William Colson, backs up this statement by arguing that the D.A.R.E program increased drug awareness to children so that “as they get a little older, [students] become very curious about these things they’ve learned about from police officers” (“The Family Council of Drug Awareness”). The program does not prevent anyone from drugs as it designed it to be because it cannot stop curiosity as it is a natural adaptation in human …show more content…
This is one of the main counterclaim of the opponent would use only because the program is only making self improvements because it was proven that it is ineffective by countless studies. In 1998, the D.A.R.E program “failed to meet federal requirements” (“Department of Education”). Numerous studies such as the one that was held in Indiana University, that was mentioned in this research paper, gave D.A.R.E a bad reputation by releasing unpleasing information that backfires the program. As the time passes, many of the researchers that has solid proof of the program being not capable of what it was designed to be, has already cornered D.A.R.E making the non-profit organization to take action in its own hands. The people who are the top leaders in the program “attempted to silence researchers at the Research Triangle Institute” (“The Future of Freedom Foundation”). The threat was effective for a couple of occasions to multiple of researchers. The statistics of children increasing drug usage before taking the program in previous studies still remains as others are threatened till this day to stay quiet, does not change the fact that the program is
