In the year 2000 a more specific food recommendations such as “let the pyramid guide your food choices” was introduce. “In 2005 the committee included for whole grains (make half your grains whole) and recommendations to reduce trans-fat intake as low as possible”. The reason for the recommendation of consuming whole grains and less fat was because two-thirds of Americans were overweight. Children, women of child-bearing age, and the elderly, were very important for the dietary guidelines of American (DGA). Nutritional assistance programs such as school lunch and the special supplemental nutritional program for women, infants, and children are required to base regulations on DGA recommendations. Another problem is dietary guidelines is not open to the public, how could people have asses to it and used it for everyday use. I also believe that imposing strict diet rules are difficult to support evidence- based nutrition. Using the computer to model food for the consumers would not be helpful. What would be helpful is giving consumers a clear information on total calories for those trying to control their calorie intake. Another thing dietary guidelines need is to consider that people eat according to their culture and traditions. People need to be educated to eat healthy food they believe to be healthy to them.
