Department of Education and Oregon Department of Education, CTSOs provide students recognition for the success in their competitive events and access to college scholarships. Business and state legislature are supporting CTSO’s at an increasing rate because of the large impact it is making. Students feel connected to a group, their school, and their organization. The little successes they have in their respective clubs can empower them to realize they are capable of larger successes including graduating high school, furthering their education beyond high school, and getting a job. A study conducted in 1998 by the University of Michigan found that high-risk students are eight to 10 times less likely to drop out in the 11th and 12th grades if they enroll in career and technical programs instead of a general program of study. Furthermore, 81% of dropouts say relevant, real-world learning opportunities would have kept them in high school. Additionally, that study noted that CTE students are less likely than general-track students to fail a course or to be absent.
CTE programs provide an answer to the questions teachers frequently receive in a classroom such as why do we have to learn this or when am I ever going to use this in my life? Through these programs students receive cross-curricular education as they practice their writing, reading, critical-thinking, and math schools with their respective CTE courses. They are learning so much more then just the technical skills of the course providing them so many more options as they move beyond high school. Students see how what they are learning will impact them in the future and why it is
