I am Gabrielle Mendoza, a first generation latino student. I come from a Latino background and was brought up in a very broken untraditional household. My grandmother alone raised me as my parents moved to a different home and raised my younger sister, leaving me with my grandmother. My grandmother was always at work making sure she kept food on the table for me. When she started working full time I was still very young, I had to learn to raise myself and do everything for myself. I took this challenging experience and upbringing and turned it into positivity in my life. It gave me a mentality to go after and attain for myself whatever it is that I wanted. It also taught me to never put limitations on myself because what I believed I could do, I always could do. Being Latino and growing up …show more content…

While in high school I have joined clubs and participated in various school groups and activities. I was invited to become a member of NHS because of my high academics and positive characteristics. Being in NHS has allowed me to embrace what I like to do most – being involved. This has given me the opportunity to meet and bond with other students who share the same interests and ambitions as me. It has also allowed me to better my school and community by participating in service projects. I was asked to be a member of the National Society of High School Scholars, which gave me access to a community of students with similar interests and ambitions as me. Being engaged in my high school has not only involved participating in clubs, but also in sports and activities. I participated and lettered in track and field, as well as in

Community is important to me. I grew up in a small town where you knew your neighbors, and chances were that you lived down the street from at least one of your teachers. Where every summer Saturday, the entire block would meet in somebody’s backyard- a fire would be lit, and all of us kids would roast marshmallows and hotdogs, and play on the wooden swing-set, playing out stories and adventures. My community wasn’t just a place where I lived and went to school- it was a family.…

I already do a lot in the community and I am always trying to better myself and others. I believe that my membership in a prestigious organization such as NHS will not affect my willingness to serve others before myself. I hope it will only assist me in being a better role model for my peers and that it will expand my opportunities to be a leader and that I will learn how to improve my service towards my community. I plan to be an active member in NHS and possibly someone that others can always go to for guidance and…

There is this unspoken weight on your shoulders to succeed, not only for yourself but your family as well. Predominantly among Hispanic first-generation students, there is also an added pressure to serve as a spokesperson for your race and crush the several stereotypes that may portray us in a negative light. This need and pressure, along with the financial instability that many of us face can have negative effects on both our mental and physical health. I personally have fallen victim to these pressures, resulting in an overwhelming amount of anxiety, depression, and uncertainty. From these lowest points in my life, my true passion for knowledge and my love for learning have allowed me to persevere and overcome these and any challenges that have risen over the years.…

Prompt #1 (300 - 5oo words) Describe the world you come from — for example, your family, community or school — and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations. Growing up in the inner city of San Diego for the early part of my childhood life was difficult.
