One group in particular that suffers from this is the LGBT minority. It has been reported that LGBT students are twice as likely to be bullied than the non-LGBT students (Kimmel 2010). In a survey done by the GLSEN, it was reported that of the 7,898 LGBT students surveyed, 74.1% were verbally harassed because of their sexual orientation and 55.2% were verbally harassed because of their gender identity (Kimmel 2010). This shows that a large group LGBT youth suffer each day for who they are.
School should be a safe place and this is not always the case and can further the fear of going to school. In the survey, GLSEN also reported that only 61.6% of the children who were bullied received help from their teachers (Kimmel 2010). When the child has both the teacher and their peers against them, it can do a lot damage. It was found that an astounding 53% attempted self harm (Scourfield, Roen, McDermott 330). Teachers should better help the students experiencing bullying by stopping it when it happens and also doing their best to counsel the student
