Process Essay: How To Make New Friends In High School

“The greatest trap in our life is not success, popularity or power, but self-rejection.” This shockingly true statement was said by Henri Nouwen, a Dutch Catholic priest, professor, writer, and theologian. When thinking about high school, I think this quote is relatable because you want to be accepted into a group and not be alone for the next four long years of high school. Before entering high school I was nervous about making friends. Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide was on at the time. The episode I was watching gave tips about how to make new friends at school, and it helped me. When school started I used some of these tips and I was making friends in no time. Just imagine freshmen year comes along and you go to your first class. You do not know anyone in there, so you have to make new friends with the upperclassmen. What do you do? Sit in the back of the room by yourself or go up and introduce yourself to someone that looks like you would get along with easily because of common interests. To survive high school, many students rely on fitting into the right social group, such as the brainiacs, the athletes, and the average Joes. First of all when entering any high school there are the brainiacs. They walk around the halls with several books in hand. Students have to figure out if they want to be with people with similar interest or just try something completely new. Even though I mentioned only three social groups in high school there are several other groups people could be a part of, such as the drama club, the cheerleaders, and the “popular” kids. When you enter high school your freshman year remember to remain calm and find the social group that fits you best; you will for sure survive the longest four years of your life with the right group of
