Cattle catastrophes

After a whole disastrous string of events containing many visits to the emergency room, an unrepaired broken tooth, life changing tragedy, and many legal issues that prevented me from staying at my own school, I journeyed to a new tiny school in the trash can of Los Angeles called Summit View West. Confused, overly optimistic, and determined to start a new, I did my best to start a new reputation; unlike my old one: “That Gay Awkward Weirdo”. Because I had Hung out with Jessica (The Nose Picker), Danni (The Sl**), Sarah (The Autistic Girl), and Bella (The Stalker), it didn’t help my situation. However low that placed me on the social food chain, I quite enjoyed my friends. Also, not until my 3rd year as a sophomore did I realize that I really enjoy being “That Gay Awkward Weirdo”. In fact I hoped to marry a “Gay Awkward Weirdo” just like me someday. We would’ve talked about all the wrong things at the wrong times, laughed a little too loud about a rock shaped like a butt, and sung the all wrong lyrics to 80s songs no one has ever heard of. Unfortunately, as much as I’d like to talk about my future love life, my past lack of social skills, and unapproved friends, I have a much more important tragically humiliating story I must press on with.

This is how I saw it on my journey to Summit View West. A separation between the Nose Pickers and Laugh Farters considered “Losers”, and the Brain Dead Teenagers who were blind and deaf due to the fact that both their eyes and their ears seemed to be glued to their phones, were the popular kids, and somewhere in between there, were the cliques based mostly on personality. Hard to find and get into, but I was sure my people were in there somewhere. Unfortunately, I did not own an instruction manual to the social ecosystem that was high school, so I had to fight alone. When I said “fight”, I assure you that that word was not an

When someone blurts out the word “high school”, what’s your first initial thought? I don’t know about you, but “cliques” are the first thought to my mind. The media is drowning in films that portray the idea of “cliques”, but personally, I believe the film Mean Girls is the best representation of the world of cliques. Means Girls is a teen classic, and I can almost bet the majority of my generation has seen or at least heard of it. It is American teen comedy film that manifests the harsh conditions teens undergo when it comes to high school cliques.…

After watching the film “Mean Girls”, there are some realistic aspects which can be applied to an actual high-school scenario. Though, most of the social context is purely based off of Hollywood creation, which allows for larger drama within and between cliques. Furthermore, there are many aspects which must be considered in comparing this fictional society to an actual high school scenario. This would include agents of socialization, social institutions, primary and secondary groups, and many other factors.…

In many academic institutions a hierarchy is created based on unspoken rules. Students may gain access to the top of the food chain in school by having expensive clothes, cars, or by being apart of the “right” sports teams or clique. This social construct, which I have experienced first hand at numerous schools, limits the influence students have over their own self image. Through rivalry and exclusion, students must choose a parochial identity rather than developing their personality from cumulative experience. Too easily can one student be considered a jock or a nerd, and rarely do these two groups find mutual ground through academics.…

High school is a different type of experience. During this time you meet many different types of people who come from many different backgrounds, you may have even attended school with most of them since elementary school. Over time you have grouped these peers of yours into mental groups if they already haven't grouped themselves into one. Every year when you come back to school you see them and you automatically know who they are going to hang out with and basically can sum up what they did all summer because even when you weren't in school they were putting their entire life online for the world to see. Does it ever get amusing or even boring seeing these same people return to their same routines and "normal" behavior?…

When it comes to the topic of conformity and individuality, most of us will readily agree; conformity within teens is a major problem. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of conformity in school. While some are convinced conformity in schools is good and should be flaunted, others believe that it's setting us up for failure and unrealistic situations. The world is complex and not as simple as school makes it seem. In school, we are taught that grades define who you are and your intellectual ability.…
