Upon sending out associates to check on the individual it was discovered that he had passed away, leaving behind a grieving work family and several work duties to be completed. The first step a servant leader would do is to break the news. They must break the news to the department and facility with compassion, strength and leadership. A servant leader would go out to the people and determine what they need. Grief will be present with the loss of a team member and a servant leader should anticipate this need. Counselors could be brought in or made available to assist employees as they deal with this difficult situation. Experts are beneficial, although the experts do not take the place of the leader. The leader needs to be there and accessible. The leader should ensure the people are emotionally stable and able to do their jobs and if not, work alongside them to get the job done. A servant leader will ask the opinion of the staff and be honest and encouraging to get through it together. A new manager will be found and things will get easier, although a servant leader through a tough situation can help make the the process easier on staff. Both individuals were long-standing employees and opted to move to a facility just 30 minutes away. When the upper management of the facility left, staff members began to exhibit frustration, fear and anxiety over what was to come. The servant leader in this situation would most importantly and constantly need to communicate. Staff needs to know what is going on and what it means to them. It is necessary for staff to know they have someone to go to for their concerns. A servant leader would not wait for people to come to them. They would be out with the people, ensuring each staff question is heard and answered as best as they can. First and foremost, a servant leader in this situation would tell them the truth and ensure staff have the proper tools to do their job. A servant leader will be focused on the people, ensuring they are informed, ensuring they are able to do their jobs, and ensuring the organization can continue on towards the vision and the future. In a hospital setting, a servant leader will continue to serve the needs of the staff in order for the staff to continue to serve the needs of the patients and community. When upper management staff leave, it is important for the remaining leadership staff to work as a team and remind staff the facility still has a mission and a vision and still has leaders who are ready and willing to support them in
