And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see. The rapture of the Church has already taken place and the wrath of God is being released in full measure on a World of sin. The second rider is on a red horse and there is great power given to him to make war, as he has the ability to take “peace from the Earth.” The great sword is symbolic of war, power and death. It is probable that during the Tribulation period there will be a terrible World War involving many nations fighting against each other. The restraining power of God’s Holy Spirit is longer active in the hearts and minds of men, gone is the convicting power that once held evil in check. Man is free to carry out all of the wickedness his heart can imagine, and the rider of the red horse will instigate this evil. The third rider is on a black horse and comes with a “balance in his hand.” Continuing with the theme of judgment, the color black is a fitting color of judgement. The third rider picks up where the second finished, now a great war has taken place and the result is death, suffering, famine, and shortages of all varieties. The balances seem to indicate a rationing, which would indicate a great shortage of supplies. The wheat, barley, and oil would speak of essentials needed to make the most common of all food items – bread. History has already witnessed the reaping of war, economic collapse, and the starvation of those who survive. The fourth seal that is opened sets free the last of the four horsemen, the rider on the pale horse. This judgement seems more severe in nature than the other three combined. This seems hard to imagine as great suffering as befallen the people of Earth already. This rider is given the power of death in several forms, the Scripture says, “to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.” This could involve more wars, famine, disease, and even the wild beast of the earth. The severity of the pale horse and the judgment that comes with this rider
