Unlikely Companions Did you know that Nazi Germans killed millions of people in World War II? Many were children, represented as a German boy, Bruno, and Shmuel, a Jewish boy, two fictional characters in the fable Boy in Striped Pajamas. The book takes place primarily in Auschwitz, Poland. This is an unlikely friendship for the two at the time. Bruno and Shmuel’s friendship is genuine even though it’s not what the society at the time wanted . Bruno and Shmuel are different though with their ethnic groups, their personalities, and their lifestyles. Bruno and Shmuel have different ethnic groups. Bruno is a young German boy. Shmuel is a young Jewish boy from Poland. Bruno lives in Nazi Germany so he’s taught German ways, and that having German nationalism is important. He is also told that Germans are an Aryan race which is a perfect race. Shmuel is from Poland and grew up with Jewish customs and traditions. They were raised with different morals and ethics. Bruno lives a secure and comfortable life with his family. His father’s job as Commandant ensures this lifestyle for them. Shmuel once lived a swell childhood but was taken from his home and put into a concentration camp. He and Bruno once lived similar lifestyles until Germans took Shmuel and his family from their once pleasant lives to a land of trials and tribulations. Shmuel was once full in life and spirit but now is just getting by. John Boyne captivates these two children from different sides of the fence into a beautiful friendship. Their lifestyles, their ethnic groups, and their personalities are different but that does not stop Bruno and Shmuel. The two friends go against all odds and become best friends with one another.
