Bruno and Gretel don’t get along very well, they tend to fight a lot even when his parents are around. While Bruno is sensitive, Gretel is not. She falls for lieutenant Kotler and accepts the ideas the Nazis throw at her. Bruno likes adventures and likes to explore, he liked books with knights who rode off to save the princess and slay dragons. Out-With is the word that John used to describe Auschwitz without actually using the word. Well when he found Shmuel he was kind of scared to talk to him first. When he met Kotler he didn’t really like him and he felt unsafe around him especially when he dragged Pavel out of the room and beat him up.
When they were thinking and the Nazis were near then they could get in trouble, but when they don’t think as much they don’t have the luxury to think around themselves. Bruno’s mother is unhappy to live there because it is no place where children should live. They can smell the people when they burn them; there is also viruses everywhere. Gretel gets lice in her hair and it is a very sad and miserable place to live. They also can’t go anywhere around the house because they will eventually run into the camp.
The author didn’t want to use the real words because they were considered a horror to say them after the war ended.
