Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are infectious diseases that are transferred from one person to another through sexual contact. Some of the most common types of STDs are Human papillomavirus (HDV), Genital Herpes, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Syphilis, and HIV/AIDs. While many people are aware of these sexually transmitted diseases, some are not, which makes the possibility of ever having these diseases more prevalent among people who are not educated about them. Minority groups are sometimes overlooked by many people; therefore, they lack the support and opportunity that other people get in order to overcome some of the obstacles they face daily; one of these obstacles is the unawareness of STDs. The aim of this paper is to highlight the impact of STDs in the minority community and bring awareness to their community about sexually transmitted diseases.
In addition, statistics have shown the high rates of STDs among blacks compared to with whites. According to The Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 2014 “Surveillance data show higher rates of reported STDs among some racial or ethnic minority groups when compared with rates among whites. Race and ethnicity in the United States are popular characteristics that are correlated with other fundamental determinants of health status”.
