The world record for days with out sleep is 11 days and 24 minutes, set by Randy gardener in 1964 (Rubio, 2015, para. 2). Since 1964 many have tried to break this record, but the effects of sleep deprivation had to many serious effects and it is no longer advised to undergo long periods with out sleep. According to the National Sleep Foundation the body goes through five stages. The first two stages consist of the body falling asleep. During stages three and four the body completely relaxes and blood flow is increased. This brings restoration to muscles, organs, and the brain. Hormones including growth hormones are released during these stages. The growth hormones rebuild muscles and strengthen the body. The final stage of sleep is called REM. REM sleep is most known for dreams but it is also responsible for a healthy immune system, alertness, and releasing hormones that affect appetite (What Happens, n.d.). The effects of not getting enough sleep have a negative impact on everyday life, lasting effects, and serious outcomes.
Cutting sleep short happens from time to time and it is understand able that the following day is going to be tough but thankfully the challenges of being tired only last until the next time the victim’s head hits the pillow. These day-to-day effects are not fun but temporary, and go away with a quick nap. The first, and obvious effect of getting less than the required seven to eight hours of sleep per night is tiredness.
