Have you ever felt like 24 hours in a day just wasn’t enough? Are you constantly tired? One word. 5 letters. Could mean all the difference to your day. Sleep is vital to the human body as it helps to restore energy, improve immune functions, help us think more efficiently and creatively, strengthen memory and improve mood. Sleep is so much more than just a passive activity as it helps protect your mental and physical health, quality of life, and safety. The quality of the sleep you receive has a lot to do with the way you feel during the day. Sleep occurs in two stages; REM Sleep and Non-REM sleep. Both stages are equally important to the human body as well as the amount of time slept. Sleep deprivation is a condition that occurs when you do not receive enough sleep. This study unlike the others did not address other issues regarding sleep. Its focus was discussing how the quality of sleep or sleep duration, with implications as to the benefits of each. These results push that adequate sleep can prevent chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease and even encourage achievement.
Although this literature review is reflective of sleep deprivation and college students, this article shed light that many of these college students created habits as far back as high school. A habit is a routine behavior, something that becomes part of your everyday schedule. This study suggests that students will continue to loss sleep as their grade level increases. As a senior graduate from high school, and set out on their journey to college one can only imagine with newfound freedom, how many hours of sleep will be lost.
