According to the Cleveland Rape Crisis Center the number one crime caused on college campuses is sexual assault. College is supposed to be a safe learning environment, not a place where students fear they may become a victim of sexual abuse. Sexual assault can be defined as any type of sexual contact or behavior that occurs without consent. As a current college student, I believe there is a dire need to address this horrific and sensitive yet pertinent topic and try to find simple and effective ways to make the overall college experience safer. A good starting point in my opinion would be bombardment of education on the dreadful topic of sexual assault. Claire McCaskill, a United States Senator, held a national survey on how colleges handle sexual assaults and from the results McCaskill states that this survey should be a “huge wake up call.” According to McCaskill’s survey, “More than 40 percent of schools have not conducted a single investigation in five years, 21 percent of schools provide no training to faculty & staff, and 31 percent provide no training for students.” Many universities do not provide factual information about sexual assault and it is important to so we can prevent future sexual assault cases. “Federal law requires every institution that knows or reasonably should have known about an alleged sexual assault to “conduct an investigation” according to McCaskill. It is important that universities educate the staff and student bodies about sexual assault. It is required to assign a title ix coordinator. This coordinator manages complaints about sexual assault and must investigate the situation. Some campuses have put out a few words of advice on what can be done to help prevent acts of sexual abuse and assault. West Virginia University states when going out to a party make sure to stick with friends, make a plan and have certain check points set to meet up incase people in your group become separated. Make sure you know what is going into your body, if your going to drink you should know your limits and do it responsibly. It is also never a good idea to let anyone handle your drink except for yourself. Drink out of clear cups and if you set your drink down and walk away it would be wise to throw it away and get a new one. Simple things like this can and will lower the chances for sexual
