Sexual Assault On College Campuses Research Paper

As we are moving onto college, there is an issue that you need to be aware of. Sexual assault in U.S colleges and universities has been going on for years but recently it has gained national attention. 1 in 5 women and 1 in 16 men will be sexually assaulted on campus. Most colleges will address sexual harassment and assault in the freshmen orientation that they "strongly suggest" all freshmen to attend and some colleges will just email a powerpoint to the students and that will be it. Students are at the highest risk of being assaulted on campus during their freshmen and sophomore year. Male students ages 18-24 are 78% more likely than non-students to experience sexual violence. Something that I want to encourage today is reporting incidents and speaking up for survivors. Studies show 90% the perpetrators are repeat offenders. When an incident is not reported the perpetrator gets a chance to hurt someone else. By reporting to authorities, you are decreasing the chances of someone else being assaulted. After looking at the statistics, I wondered how we can stop sexual assault on campuses because students deserve a safe learning environment. Like I said colleges don't give this issue as much attention as it needs. An optional orientation won't stop sexual violence but something that can help is compulsory sex and relationships education. If it is made a requirement, more students will be actually educated. Students need to find out what consent and coercion really mean in order to understand the intensity of this issue.
