Violence, otherwise known as the use of physical force to injure someone and/or to inflict damage onto something, has been around since the beginning of time (Gale “Violence and Violence Prevention”). Violence is now a part of the everyday person’s life and is so common that the severity of it in today’s society often goes unnoticed. Violence is involved in nearly every aspect of our lives, such as TV programs, video games, music, and school. Because of this, the amount of violence in today’s society continues to increase, and the people of today continue to grow more violent towards one another. However, among all of the violence that occurs today, violence within the media and violence within the youth seem to be one of the largest issues, similar to that of Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451. Out of all of the violence happening today, nearly every person is exposed to violence within the media. Studies show that media violence is one of the leading causes of violent behavior and aggression across the world, including the countries of Japan, Singapore, Germany, Portugal, and the U.S. (Kaplan). Not only does media violence cause violent behavior, but according to the American Psychological Association, it can also lead children to become less sensitive to the suffering of others, more fearful of the world around them, and more likely to become aggressive or harmful to other individuals (American Psychological Association).
