In addition, I learned a lot from this film. A few things that I learned that had really shocked me was, most women who are raped have known the person who raped them for over a year. Another shocking statistic was that 88% of rape wasn’t reported. One of the readings I connected to this documentary was “Men on rape” by Tim Beneke. I thought this reading was an accurate reading to connect to the documentary because of the amount of emphasis it had on the rape culture specifically, the male privilege. The reading goes into detail on how women depend on men, the quote I found the most moving was, “I wouldn’t play games with men for their protection”. I think it is extremely disheartening that women have to play such mind games in order to avoid being hurt. The reading goes on to explain the sort of extents women will go to, to not be rape such as, not walking alone at night and carrying pepper spray with …show more content…
My first question, “How did this event convey and understanding of privilege?”. This event was direct result of male privilege. Men rape women because they believe they have the power to do so. Men believe that women are less than them, so they rape. My next question is, “Did you see intersectional understandings and in what way?”. I saw many intersectional understanding including the overlap of being white and male. If you are white and male you seemingly have a less serious consequence for raping a woman. Another question, I asked myself was, “Are there any suggestions on how to improve this event?”. I believe there are many ways this event could be improved including a more extensive discussion after the movie. It would help if they had a discussion about the film at the end of the event so that people could bounce ideas off of eachother. The next question I posed was, “What else would I like to see explored and how would I suggest this be done?”. I would like to see the documentary go more in-depth about white privilege in the rape culture. I believe that white male privilege isn’t the only deciding factor on punishment for the offender. Lastly, this event has brought up many questions for me. The first question being, “Why doesn’t someone do something about the fact that universities do not report rape?”. The answer to this question would be, people are
