As time went on and various civil rights movements arose, many minorities, including women, African-Americans, and the poor have been included towards the American Dream. Over the past decades, it may have seem that the US is actually progressing towards making it possible for every American to have their share on the American Dream, however that is not the case living in the 21st Century. With corrupt politicians, wars, violence and racism, achieving the American Dream is nearly a myth for some.
Entering the era of the 2000’s, all seems innovative and progressive. Technology is on the rise and so is adopting new ideas rather keeping the conservative traditions is the new trend. Gay marriage is now legal and having our 44th president being the first African-American is ‘revolutionary’. The American Dream was considered that to reach the goal, one has to work hard enough to reach their pursuit of happiness. Nowadays, it 's either work hard to reach out of debt, barely living on minimum wage, and to hear the terrible events that happens daily throughout the news network. One used to desire to have a family, living in a house with a picket fence and have the car of the year, but now it 's one desiring to at least have an apartment to comfortably live in. Although it is not the individuals fault, for it is the governments fault and big corporations for stealing the big bucks from the middle and lower class. Daily, many young people desire to have a higher education, but the high-price tag prevents them from having it. Some go through student loans, which leads them in debt, which will eventually make it harder for them to seek their American Dream through getting a college education and living a successful career. Not only is it affecting people economically, the meaning of the American Dream also changes for those who face discrimination. For a guy to love his boyfriend is considered an abomination, it 's his civil liberty to marry who he wants. While doing that, he is pursuing his happiness through love and not hate. For an African American who just wants to be viewed as any other human being, is considered as dangerous and a ‘thug’ while
